Year 4

Welcome to Year 4.

General Information

As well as your class teacher, Mrs Vernon will be supporting children in class on Thursday and Friday morning. Mrs Blake will also be taking some children for maths intervention and some extra reading this term. On a Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Swirles will teach French and Mr Carter will be taking children for their PE lessons. Please ensure the children have their full PE kits in this day.

In Year 4, children take their home-reading books home and their accelerated reading books home. We ask that children read at least one page each night. We expect children to be reading their home-reading book at least three times a week. Your child's class teacher will check your child's reading diary every Friday to ensure they have been reading at home. Accelerated reading books can be read at home and at school. Every morning, the children have time to complete an accelerated reading quiz until morning registration. The accelerated reading books are matched to your child's reading level. If they get three 100% scores on their accelerated reading quizzes, they are allowed to move up to the next reading level.

We want to encourage a love of reading in every way possible. We are always sharing our favourite books with the children and we also strongly encourage children to read their own books, comics, magazines etc. They are welcome to bring these into school as sometimes the children share their favourite books with the rest of the class. Further, we have a class novel, which we try to share with the children whenever possible. Also, in your child's classroom there is a classroom reading area where your child can access a range of different texts. If you have any old magazines/comics, we would appreciate if you could bring these in for the children to read.

The children will receive one piece of English and one piece of maths homework every Friday and this is due back into school the following Wednesday. The English and maths homework will consolidate what the children have been learning in class. Spellings are also given out on a Friday and tested the following Friday. The spellings will be looking at spelling patterns detailed in the national curriculum and the common exception words for Year 3 and 4. If there are any problems, please note in your child's homework book.
